Mega Pokemon FAQ

What are Mega Pokemon?

Mega Pokemon are temporary forms of existing Pokemon. When in their temporary Mega form (lasting 8 hours) they have increased power, catching bonuses and can be the best in their class for raid attacking and damage

Having a Mega Pokemon evolved will give Candy and XP bonuses when catching Pokemon with types that match your Mega evolved Pokemon . These bonuses can be nuanced and are detailed in full further down the page.

How do you obtain Mega Pokemon

In PokemonGo, the way you obtain Mega Pokemon is first by first collecting enough Mega Energy for its first Mega Evolution

The main source of Mega energy is through mega raids and field research.

Note you can also get mega energy for spinning Gym Pokestops but this historically only grants Mega Beedrill energy.

There is also a rare chance to get a small amounts of invisible mega energy given out as part of non-mega in-person raids.

Once you have completed the first mega evolution on a Pokemon, you can decide if you want to wait for the cooldown to finish or spend more energy to Mega evolve again before the timer is up.

Over time, if you repetitively mega evolve a specific Pokemon, the free cooldown will decrease permanently to a mimimum of 3 days (see mega levels table below)

Can I also earn Mega Energy from walking a buddy?

Once you have Mega evolved a certain species (Eg: Charizard) you can walk any pokemon in your storage from the same family (Charizard, Charmeleon or Chamander) and earn additional Mega Energy

Unfortunately the option to walk for mega energy only appears once you have registered a Mega Pokemon to the Mega Pokedex, without having mega-evolved before you will have to collect a particular Mega Pokemon's initial Mega Energy for its first evolution from Raids or Research before you can walk to earn Mega Energy.

What are Mega Levels?

In 2022, Mega pokemon were updated to level up each day you Mega Evolve them.

Each Mega level brings better bonuses for catching pokemon that share a type with that mega Pokemon

What is the Mega Raid Damage Boost bonus?

During battle, having a Mega Pokemon active and battling on the field will make all allied trainers get a damage boost while your mega is alive

For trainers using a pokemon with moves that matches your Mega Pokemon, they will receive a 30% damage boost using those attacks

Other players not using the same type of your mega will instead receive a flat 10% boost on their Pokemon while your Mega Pokemon is active.

Once your Mega Pokemon faints, the boost will no longer be active. (Unless it has a primal boost - see next point)

Your Mega cannot boost its own attacks, but other trainers can also bring Mega pokemon to boost your Pokemon in battle!

What about primal raid damage boost?

Primal Kyogre, Primal Groudon and Mega Rayquaza all have a unique primal damage boost

They give other people you raid with the same battle boost as Mega Pokemon (listed above) however they do not even need to be alive or actively participating on the battlefield to give a damage bonus

As long as they are in your current battle party (even feinted or in the last slot of your raiding battle party), they will still give the damage boost, which overall lasts longer than normal Megas - who only can provide their damage boost while they are alive and on the battlefield.

These 3 Primal / Mega Pokemon are unique in this way.

What does Mega X and Y Mean?

For Mega Charizard (and eventually Mewtwo) there is an option to Mega evolve into either form picking either form will increment your Pokemon's mega level just like any other Mega pokemon! There is no need to select one specific form each time, you can decide which form you want to mega evolve without any consequences.

Are there more Megas of certain types?

Yes, Some types are more heavily represented by Mega Pokemon than other types
See the table below outlining the available types

Type Released Unreleased Total
ice 2 - 2
rock 3 - 3
electric 3 - 3
poison 3 - 3
ghost 3 - 3
normal 3 1 4
grass 4 - 4
ground 4 1 5
fairy 4 1 5
bug 5 - 5
water 5 1 6
dark 5 1 6
fire 5 1 6
steel 5 1 6
fighting 5 2 7
flying 6 - 6
psychic 7 4 11
dragon 9 - 9

Note: Megas with 2 forms (X/Y variants) are counted as seperate Megas however these types are bound to a single Pokemon and you can choose which type to Mega These counts may have small differences based on other analysis found online

Do Mega Pokemon keep their costumes?

No, Pokemon such as sunglasses Blastoise and Party hat Charizard will temporarily lose their costume in Mega form. But dont worry, their costume will return once their 8 hours in mega form is over! There are also some unresolved visual bugs with sunglasses Absol, but it does not impact mega evolution

Do I have to wait 8 hours to mega evolve another Mega Pokemon?

No, If you have an active Mega Pokemon, you can instantly decide to Mega evolve a different Pokemon, and this will cancel your current Mega Pokemon. Your active Mega Pokemon will then change to the newly evolved Mega Pokemon.

Doing this will not have any negative concequences towards Mega leveling, as the mega level increase is applied as soon as you Mega Evolve. This tactic is used to quickly level your Mega Pokemon, but remember the Mega Level counter can only increase once a day for each individual Pokemon.

Will this page be updated to include Primals, Dynamax and Gigantamax?

If these mechanics hit PokemonGo and function similarly enough, I will add these forms to the page

How is this page updated?

I push out updates from my personal pokedex spreadsheet to my website, which flows through to all my pages If there is some out of date content, feel free to tap me on the sholder here!
